Genus Bifidobacterium
Orla-Jensen 1924
Gram-positive rods of various shapes, with protuberances, branching, slightly bifurcated or spatuled extremities, non-spore-forming and non-motile;
non-acid-fast, saccharoclastic, acetic and lactic acid are formed and glucose is degraded exclusively and characteristically by the fructose 6-
phosphate phosphoketolase; anaerobic; no nitrate reduction,  indole not produced, catalase negative; some factors, called “bifidus factors”
stimulate growth (N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, lactoferrin, oligo- and polysaccharides);

NOTES

According to Nouioui et al. (2018),

Bifidobacterium coryneforme
is a later
heterotypic synonym of Bifidobacterium
indicum Scardovi and Trovatelli 1969
.

Bifidobacterium inopinatum and B.
denticolens
were transfered to
Scardovia inopinata and Parascardovia
denticolens
, respectively
(Jian W, Dong X, 2002).

According to Sakata et al. 2002,
Bifidobacterium infantis Reuter 1963
(Approved Lists 1980) is a later
heterotypic synonym of
Bifidobacterium
longum
