Genus Bifidobacterium
Orla-Jensen 1924
Gram-positive rods of various shapes, with protuberances, branching, slightly bifurcated or spatuled extremities, non-spore-forming and non-motile;
non-acid-fast, saccharoclastic, acetic and lactic acid are formed and glucose is degraded exclusively and characteristically by the fructose 6-
phosphate phosphoketolase; anaerobic; no nitrate reduction, indole not produced, catalase negative; some factors, called “bifidus factors” stimulate
growth (N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, lactoferrin, oligo- and polysaccharides);
