Synonym: Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum subsp. porcinum Zhu, Li and Dong 2003.
Gram-positive irregular rods, 0.5 / 3-8 µm long, singly or sometimes arranged in ‘V’
shape. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are convex, with entire margins, white, and 1.5-2 mm in diameter after 24 h
anaerobic incubation at 37 ºC on TPYG agar. Aggregated cell clumps are formed in
liquid cultures (TPYG liquid) but cells are readily dispersed by shaking. Growth
temperature 30-46.5 ºC, optimum 37-41 ºC, variable at 20 and 50 ºC. Optimum pH 7.0-
7.2. Can grow at pH 4.5 and weak growth at pH 4.0. Strictly anaerobic.
Isolated from faeces of a piglet (domestic).

esterase lipase C8, alpha-fucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, gelatin liquefaction, H2S production,indole production, lipase, alpha-
mannosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, nitrate reduction, oxidase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, urease, valine arylamidase, acid
production from amygdalin, arbutin, D- and L-arabinose, inulin, D-mannitol, D-mannose, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, methyl
beta-D-xylopyranoside, rhamnose, sorbose, and L-xylose.
Variable results for acid production from gluconate, D-lactose, melezitose, methyl alpha-D-glucoside (weak), D-ribose, salicin,
trehalose, and D-xylose.
