Synonyms:
Bifidobacterium animalis Scardovi and Trovatelli 1974; Bifidobacterium longum subsp. animalis biotype a Mitsuoka 1969.
Gram-positive irregular rod-shaped cells, with the central part slightly enlarged.
Branching can occur to form cross-like aggregates of four cells. Non-spore-forming.
Non-motile.
Colonies are smooth, convex, cream to white, glistening and soft.
Phase variation: transparent colonies, minute and mostly spherical, develop opaque
colonies with species-specific shapes and dimensions. Anaerobic. Growth
temperature 25-45 ºC, optimum 39-41 ºC. Grows at pH 6.0-7.4, optimum pH 6.4-7.0.
Isolated from faeces of rats and guinea pigs.

D-glucose, D-lactose, maltose, melibiose, raffinose, D-ribose, salicin, starch, sucrose and D-xylose.

Negative results for catalase, gelatin liquefaction, indole production, nitrate reduction, acid production from amylose, D- and L-fucose,
gluconate, D-glucuronate, glycerol, inulin, D-mannitol, porcine gastric mucin, rhamnose, D-sorbitol, and xylan.
Ammonia is not produced from arginine or urea.

Variable results for acid production from amylopectin, cellobiose, D-glucosamine, D-mannose, melezitose, pectin and trehalose.
