Cells are small, thin, spherical or bubble shaped, often containing central granules,
resembling an eye, with no branching tendency.
Anaerobic. Optimum growth temperature is 36-38 ºC. No growth at 20 or 46.5 ºC.
Is the predominant bifidobacteria in the faeces of breast-fed infants.
Isolated from faeces of suckling calves and from human vagina.
Non-pathogenic for man or animals.

Variable results for acid production from cellobiose, L-fucose, D-glucosamine, esculin, inulin, inositol, D-mannitol, D-mannose,
melezitose, salicin, D-sorbitol, starch, trehalose and D-xylose.
