Gram-positive cocci, 1.6-1.8 μm, forming long chains. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are white, non-haemolytic and 0.8-1.0 mm in diameter after incubation on
blood agar at 37 ºC for 24 h. On MS agar, colonies appear small, dark blue and
crinkled. MS agar containing sucrose makes characteristic colonies by production of
bacterial exopolysaccharide. Facultatively anaerobic. Growth does not occur at 45 ºC.
Isolated from the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) oral cavity.
Undetermined. Bacterial exopolysaccharide is considered a virulence factor, involved in dental caries production.

Positive results for aesculin hydrolysis, leucine arylamidase, beta-glucosidase, alanyl-phenylalanylproline arylamidase, urea
hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose, D-fructose, gentiobiose, D-glucose,
D-mannose, maltose, pullulan, raffinose, salicin, sucrose & trehalose.
Negative for alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, catalase, hippuric acid hydrolysis, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8),
lipase (C14), valine arylamidase, cystine arylamidase, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, naphthol-ASBI-phosphohydrolase,
alpha-fucosidase, alpha and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, pyroglutamic acid arylamidase,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, glycyl-tryptophan arylamidase beta-mannosidase, acid production from: D-adonitol, D-arabitol,
cyclodextrin, dulcitol, erythritol, D-fucose, gluconate, glycerol, glycogen, D-galactose, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside,
N-acetylglucosamine, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, melibiose, melezitose, D-mannitol, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside,
