Gram-positive cocci (sometimes elongated), arranged in pairs, clusters or short
chains.
Colonies on blood agar plates after 2 days are small, circular, entire, low convex,
translucent to opaque, smooth & nonpigmented. Variable hemolysis on horse blood
agar. Facultatively anaerobic, growth at 37.0 ºC, no growth at 10 or 45 ºC. No growth in
6.5% NaCl broth. Bile esculin test is negative.
Isolated from human clinical specimens (blood from patient with endocarditis, oral cavity from patient with periodontitis).
Opportunistic human pathogen.
