Phylum Firmicutes, Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Listeriaceae, Genus Listeria, Listeria aquatica Den Bakker et al. 2014.
Gram-positive, straight rods with rounded ends, 0.6-0.7 x 1.5-2.4 µm. Non-motile at
4, 22, 30 or 37 ºC.
Colonies resemble typical Listeria colonies morphology. Optimum growth
temperature is 37-41 ºC. No growth at 7 ºC or below. Hemolysis is not produced.
Aerobic and facultative anaerobic. Grows well on BHI agar.
Isolated from freshwater in Florida, USA.

Some characters were determined using API Listeria (numerical profile 6731) and
API 50 CHB/E kits.

Positive results for catalase, methyl red test, alpha-mannosidase, nitrate reduction
(no nitrite reduction), acid production from: aesculin ferric citrate, N-acetylglucosamine,
amygdalin, arbutin, L-arabinose, cellobiose, D-fructose, D-glucose, D-mannose, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, salicin, D-tagatose &
D-xylose.

Negative results for arylamidase, acid production from: D-arabinose, D-adonitol, D-arabitol, L-fucose, D-galactose, glycogen, methyl
alpha-D-glucoside, glucose 1-phosphate, gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, inulin, lactose, maltose, D-mannitol, melezitose,
melibiose, methyl alpha-D-mannoside, raffinose, L-sorbose, sucrose, turanose & methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside.

Variable results for Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: glycerol, inositol & D-lyxose.
