Synonyms:
Lactobacillus zeae (Kuznetsov 1959) Dicks, Du Plessis, Dellaglio and Lauer 1996; Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei
ATCC 393,
Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 15820.
Gram-positive rods, 0.5-0.8 / 1.2-2.4 µm, occurring singly or in chains. Non-motile.
Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are white (subsp. zeae) or creamy (subsp. silagei), smooth, glistening and
1-2 mm in diameter on MRS agar. Facultative anaerobic.
Subsp. zeae grows at 10-45 ºC (optimally at 37 ºC), at pH 3.5-10.0 (optimally at pH
7.0) and in 0-8.0% NaCl.
Subsp. silagei grows at 5-50 ºC (optimally at 40 ºC), at pH
3.5-10.0 (optimally at pH 7.0) and in 0-9.0% NaCl.
Subsp. zeae was isolated from corn steep liquor, cheese, human throat, human pus.
Subsp. silagei was isolated from an Austrian corn silage.
Undetermined.
