Gram-positive rods, 0.5-0.8 / 2.0-7.0 µm, occuring singly or in pairs. Non-motile.
Colonies on supplemented MRS agar (0.1% L-cysteine and 2% fructose) are white,
opaque, with a smooth to rough surface, raised, moist, 2-3 mm in diameter, under
anaerobic conditions after 3 days at 35 ºC. Grows at 15 and 50 ºC; no growth at 5 ºC.
Facultative anaerobe; grows well on supplemented MRS agar under aerobic
conditions. Range of pH 3.0-12.0 (in supplemented MRS broth).
Isolated from the honey stomach of the honeybee, Apis mellifera mellifera.
Description is based mostly on API 50 CHL and API ZYM (bioMerieux) results.
Positive results for acid phosphatase, esterase C4, esculin hydrolysis, beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, leucine arylamidase,
valine arylamidase, acid production from amygdalin, esculin, fructose, glucose (without gas production), mannose,
N-acetylglucosamine, sorbitol and salicin.
Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, catalase, cystine arylamidase, esterase C8, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase,
alpha-glucosidase, acid production from L- and D-arabinose, L- and D-arabitol, adonitol, cellobiose, erythritol, fucose, gluconate, 2-
and 5-ketogluconate, glycerol, glycogen, beta-gentiobiose, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, mannitol, maltose, melezitose,
rhamnose, ribose, starch, turanose, tagatose, xylitol and xylose.
Variable results for acid production from arbutin (weak reaction), dulcitol (weak reaction), galactose (weak reaction), melibiose (weak
reaction), methyl alpha-D-glucoside (weak reaction), raffinose (weak reaction), sorbose, sucrose and trehalose (weak reaction).
