Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Gammaproteobacteria, Order Enterobacterales, Family Pectobacteriaceae, Genus
Dickeya, Dickeya zeae Samson et al. 2005.
Gram-negative rods, 0.5-1.0 x 1.0-3.0 µm with rounded ends. Usually motile by
means of peritrichous flagella. Occur alone, in pairs, sometimes in chains.
S-type colonies. Growth temperature 36 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from water and from soft rot and wilt of Zea mays, Ananas comosus, Brachiaria ruziziensis, Chrysanthemum morifolium,
Musa spp., Nicotiana tabacum, Oryza sativa and Solanum tuberosum.
Cause vascular wilts or soft rots on a range of host plants.

Positive results for nitrates reduction, indole production, catalase, acid production
from glucose. Pectinolytic. Oxidase negative. Catabolize L-arabinose, myo-inositol,
D-malate, malonate, D-mannose, mucate, saccharate and mesotartrate, and not
D-trehalose, methyl alpha-glucoside, D-arabitol or sorbitol.
