Basonym: Erwinia salicis (Day 1924) Chester 1939;Old synonyms:
Bacterium salicis, Phytomonas salicis, Pseudobacterium salicis,
Erwinia amylovora var. salicis, Pseudomonas saliciperda.
Gram-negative rods, 0.5-1.0 x 1-3 µm. Motile by peritrichous flagella.
Colonies are generally mucoid, domed and can vary in color from white to cream.
Optimum growth temperature 26 - 30 ºC. No growth at 40 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from plants.
Causes a vascular wilt (watermark disease) of Salix species.

Positive results for catalase, H2S production (from cysteine), acid production from
fructose, D-galactose, D-glucose, D-mannose, salicin, and sucrose.

Negative results for oxidase, nitrate reduction, indole production, arginine dihydrolase, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase,
starch hydrolysis, acid production from adonitol, dulcitol, and lactose.
