Phylum Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria), Class Epsilonproteobacteria, Order Campylobacterales, Family Arcobacteraceae, Genus
Arcobacter, Arcobacter faecis Whiteduck-Leveillee et al. 2019.
Species description is based on a single isolate.
Gram-negative, slightly curved rods,0.2-0.5 x 1.3-2.1 µm. Motile by a single polar
flagellum. Non-encapsulated. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on blood agar and modified Agarised Arcobacter Medium (m-AAM) are
small,1-3 mm in diameter, translucent beige to whitish color after 96 h of incubation
at 30 ºC. Growth occurs at 25, 30 and 37 ºC after 3-6 days on CCDA, MacConkey agar,
nutrient medium + 5% sheep blood containing 0.1% sodium deoxycholate and 1%
oxgall under aerobic and microaerophilic conditions. Cell growth was observed on
nutrient medium + 5% sheep blood containing 0.05% safranin and 0.01% TTC only at
25 and 30 ºC under aerobic and microaerophilic conditions. Grows on 0.04% TTC at
25 and 30 ºC only under microaerophilic condition. No growth on Minimal medium,
Marine agar and in the presence of 1% glycine and 4% NaCl. Non-haemolytic.
Isolated from a human waste septic tank. Susceptible to cefoperazone (64 mg / l), azithromycin, cefoperazone, chloramphenicol,
ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid and tetracycline.
Undetermined.
