Gram-negative spiral or S-shaped, 0.25-0.3 x 1.6-1.8 μm. Motile by long bipolar
flagella. Transform into coccoid forms after 10 days of incubation.
Colonies are wet, convex or flat and cream-coloured, but after long incubation they
may vary in size and morphology. No haemolysis on blood agar is observed. H2 is not
required  for growth. No growth under aerobic conditions at 37 ºC, under anaerobic
conditions at 37 ºC, or under microaerobic conditions at 25 ºC. All can grow at 37 and
42 ºC under microaerobic conditions. All strains can grow on nutrient agar without
blood, but most of them cannot grow on MacConkey agar. Strains grow on blood agar
medium supplemented with 1% glycine or 1% bile but not in 2% or 4% NaCl. The
majority of the strains cannot grow on 0.04% TTC, metronidazole (4 mg / l) and
cefoperazone (64 mg / l).
Isolated from bile samples of chickens with spotty liver disease in Australia.
Sensitive to nalidixic acid (30 µg per disc) and most of them are resistant to cephalothin (30 µg per disc).
Undetermined.

Positive results for catalase, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis, oxidase and urease.
Negative results for H
2S production on TSI.
Variable results for nitrate reduction or hippurate hydrolysis.
