Polynucleobacter, Polynucleobacter aenigmaticus Hahn et al. 2017.
Gram-negative curved rods, 0.3-0.5 x 0.5-1.0 μm. Non-motile. Nucleoids are present
inside cells (rarely).
Colonies grown on NSY agar are unpigmented, circular and convex with smooth
surface. Growth occurs at up to 32 ºC. NaCl is not required for growth. Maximum NaCl
concentration tolerated is 0.3% (w/v). Aerobic, no anaerobic growth.
Isolated from the monimolimnion (the lower, dense stratum of a meromictic lake that does not mix with the waters above) of Lake
Krottensee, Austria.
Undetermined.

permanently anoxic monimolimnion of a temperate meromictic lake. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 67, 4646-4654.

Positive results for catalase and oxidase.
Can assimilate acetate, pyruvate, malonate, malate, fumarate, succinate, L-glutamate, L-cysteine and L-alanine. Weak reaction for W
propionic acid, oxalic acid, D-galacturonic acid, D-glucose, D-lyxose and L-serine.
No assimilation of glycolate, glyoxylate, oxaloacetate, citrate, levulinic acid, Dmannose, D-galactose, D-fructose, L-fucose, D-sorbitol,
L-leucine, L-histidine, L-aspartate, L-asparagine or betaine.
