No grouping by Lancefield carbohydrate antigens.
Gram-positive cocci, occurring in pairs or chains. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on blood agar are white, 0.75-1.0 mm in diameter and non-haemolytic at 37
ºC after 24 hour incubation. Colonies are small, dark blue and crinkled on MS agar.
Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from clinical specimens of the elephant oral cavity. Susceptible to bacitracin (2 U/ml).
Undetermined. Oral isolates from healthy elephants.

Most tests were performed using Rapid ID32 Strep, API 50 CH and API ZYM kits.

Positive results for acid phosphatase, aesculin hydrolysis, alanyl-phenylalanyl-proline arylamidase, beta-glucosidase, naphthol-AS-
BI-phosphohydrolase, leucine arylamidase, Voges–Proskauer test, acid production from: amygdalin, arbutin, aesculin, D-arabitol,
cellobiose, D-fructose, D-glucose, D-galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, inulin, lactose, maltose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, melibiose,
raffinose, salicin, D-sorbitol, sucrose, D-tagatose & trehalose.

Negative for alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, catalase, cystine arylamidase, alpha-glucosidase, alpha- and beta-
galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, hippurate hydrolysis, urease, valine arylamidase, acid
production from: D-arabinose, glycogen, gluconate, D-ribose, starch, D-xylose & methyl beta-xylopyranoside.
