Lancefield group C.
Gram-positive cocci, grouped in pairs or short chains, nonspore-forming.
Grey-white, 0.2-0.3 mm in diameter colonies after 24 hours incubation on sheep blood
agar. Initially  nonhemolytic, become beta-haemolytic after 3 days. Facultatively
anaerobic, growth at 37.0 ºC. Growth on : Trypticase soy agar with sheep blood.
Two isolates from seals (Halichoerus grypus and Phoca vitulina).
Unknown (one lung isolate from dead seal).

Some characters were tested on API (Biomerieux) kits.

Positive results for alanine phenylalanine proline arylamidase, acid phosphatase
(weak reaction), chymotrypsin, leucine arylamidase, valine arylamidase positive and acid production from lactose.

Negative results for esculin, alpha- & beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, catalase, hippurate hydrolysis, Voges-Proskauer
reaction, acid production from: L-arabinose, D-arabitol, cyclodextrin, glycogen, inulin, mannitol, melibiose, melezitose, methyl
beta-D-glucopyranoside, pullulan, raffinose, ribose, sorbitol, starch, sucrose, D-tagatose and trehalose.
