No reaction with Lancefield antisera.
Gram-positive cocci, 1.6-1.8 μm, forming long chains. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are white, non-haemolytic and 0.8-1.0 mm in diameter after incubation on
blood agar at 37 ºC for 24 h. On MS agar, colonies appear small, dark blue and
crinkled. MS agar containing sucrose makes characteristic colonies by production of
bacterial exopolysaccharide. Facultatively anaerobic. Growth does not occur at 45 ºC.
Isolated from the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) oral cavity .
Undetermined. Bacterial exopolysaccharide is considered a virulence factor, involved in dental caries production.

Most tests were performed using API 50 CH, API ZYM and Rapid ID 32 kits.

Positive results for aesculin hydrolysis, leucine arylamidase, acid phosphatase, beta-glucosidase, beta-galactosidase,
alanyl-phenylalanyl-proline arylamidase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose, D-fructose,
D-glucose, gentiobiose, maltose, pullulan, salicin, sucrose & trehalose.

Negative for alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, catalase, hippurate hydrolysis, beta-glucuronidase, alpha-galactosidase,
pyroglutamic acid arylamidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, glycyl-tryptophan arylamidase, beta-mannosidase, esterase (C4),
esterase lipase (C8), lipase (C14), valine arylamidase, cystine arylamidase, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin,
naphthol-ASBI-phosphohydrolase, alpha-fucosidase, urease, acid production from: D-adonitol, D-arabitol, dulcitol, erythritol,
D-fucose, glycerol, D-galactose, N-acetylglucosamine, gluconate, glycogen, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside, inositol, inulin, lactose,
D-lyxose, melibiose, D-mannose, D-mannitol, melezitose, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, raffinose, L-rhamnose, D-ribose,
D-sorbitol, L-sorbose, starch, D-tagatose, turanose, xylitol, D- or L-xylose & methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside.
