Gram-positive cocci, grouped in pairs and short chains.
Grow at 37 ºC. Aerobic, facultatively anaerobic. Small (0.5 mm in diameter), grey
alpha-hemolytic colonies on sheep blood agar after overnight incubation at 37 ºC in
5% CO
2 . Growth media: Trypticase soy agar with 5% sheep blood, Brain heart
infusion agar or broth.
Isolated from broiler chikens with septicaemia. Human clinical isolate reported.
Septicaemia in chickens. One report of bacteremia in abattoir worker.
Experimental infection: endocarditis, splenomegaly & hepatomegaly in chickens.
