Phylum Firmicutes, Class Bacilli, Order Lactobacillales, Family Streptococcaceae, Genus Streptococcus, Streptococcus cuniculi Vela
et al. 2014.
Gram-positive cocci, 0.7-1 μm in diameter, occurring in pairs or chains up 7-10 cells.
Colonies on blood agar are small, circular, and non-pigmented, 0.75-1.0 mm in
diameter and alpha-haemolytic at 37 ºC for 24 h. Facultatively anaerobic. Growth
occurs at 22, 30, 37 and 42 ºC but not at 4 or 15 ºC. Grows in the presence of 3.5 %
NaCl but not in broth containing 4.5% or 6.5% NaCl.
Isolated from the nasal sample and tonsils samples of wild rabbits. The full habitat range is not known.
