Phylum Firmicutes, Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Salinicoccus, Salinicoccus carnicancri Jung et

Gram-positive cocci, 1.0-2.5 μm, occuring singly or in pairs, tetrads or clumps. Non-
motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are ivory-coloured, circular and measure 1.0-2.0 mm in diameter after 3
days culture on Marine Agar supplemented with 10 % NaCl at 30 ºC. Growth occurs at
pH 6.0-11.0; optimum at pH 7.0-8.0. Moderately halophilic; growth occurs in media
containing 0-20% NaCl; optimum 12% NaCl. Grows at 4-45 ºC; optimal growth at
30-37 ºC.
Isolated from crabs preserved in soy sauce, a traditional Korean fermented seafood.

naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, alpha- and beta-glucosidase, tyrosine hydrolysis, urease, acid production from: amygdalin,
arbutin, aesculin, D-fructose, glycerol, D-glucose, 5-ketogluconate, D-mannose, D-mannitol, maltose, N-acetylglucosamine,
D-ribose, salicin, sucrose and trehalose.

Negative results for cellulose hydrolysis, cystine arylamidase, DNA hydrolysis,  esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), lipase (C14),
leucine arylamidase, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl beta-
glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase, alpha-fucosidase, nitrate reduction, oxidase, starch hydrolysis, Tween 80 hydrolysis, valine
arylamidase, acid production from: D-galactose.
