(ex Baynes and Simmons 1960) Sneath and Stevens 1990.

Historical synonyms:
Actinobacillus seminis of Kilian and Frederiksen (1981) and Philips (1984), Phenon 14 of Sneath and Stevens
1985.
Gram-negative bacilli or cocobacilli, over 2 µm long, nonmotile, nonsporulated.
Colonies are round, graysh, semitransparent and about 1 mm in diameter after 48
hours at 37 ºC on sheep blood agar. Nonhemolytic. No growth under 15 or over 45 ºC.
Growth is aerobic, facultatively anaerobic, mesophilic, 5% CO
2 is often required on
first isolation. No growth on MacConkey agar. V-factor & X-factor independent growth.
Isolated from sheep (semen).
Bacteria has been associated with epididymitis and orchitis in rams, ovine contagious epididymitis, mastitis in ewes, polyarthritis,
posthitis and abortion in sheep.

Positive results for catalase, and acid production from D(+) glucose (without gas).

Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, Voges-Proskauer, urease, arginine dehydrolase, lysine decarboxylase, indole production,
ONPG, acid production from: D(+) xylose, dulcitol, D(-) sorbitol, D(+) mannose, cellobiose, lactose, melibiose, sucrose (saccharose),
trehalose, fructose raffinose, dextrin, inulin, esculin, and salicin.

Variable results for nitrates reduction, oxidase, methyl red, ornithine decarboxylase, acid production from: L(+) arabinose,
