Synonyms: Bisgaard Taxon 9 (sorbitol positive strains; isolates sorbitol negative are tentatively designated genomospecies 2,
Christensen et al., 2002).
Gram-negative, pleomorphic cells (rods). Nonmotile. Nonsporulated.
Colonies are circular, raised and regular with an entire margin; the surface of the
colonies is smooth, shiny, grayish and nontransparent. Mucoid and watery cultures
also exist.
Diameter is 2-3 mm after 24 h aerobic incubation at 37 ºC. No hemolysis on sheep
and bovine blood agar.
Growth on MacConkey agar is variable. V-factor independent.
Isolated from the oral cavity of apparently healthy horses, as well as from diseased foals and horses (with septicemia and arthritis).
Have been isolated from diseased foals and horses (with septicemia and arthritis).
