Synonym:
Mycobacterium kansasii subtype III.
Acid-fast, moderately long or long rods.
Rough, photochromogenic colonies grows in about 14 days at 37 ºC on Lowenstein-
Jensen medium. Beige colonies can be obtained on 7H10 medium after 2 weeks’
growthin the same culture conditions. Grows at 25 ºC, but not at 45 ºC.  No growth on
5% (w/v) NaCl or on MacConkey agar without crystal violet.
The type strain was isolated from a blood culture of a patient with a disseminated mycobacterial infection.
Resistant to TCH (5 µg/ml).
It is rarely pathogenic.

Positive results for nitrate reduction, and Tween 80 hydrolysis.

Negative results for arylsulfatase (3 days), niacin accumulation, and pyrazinamidase.

Variable results for arylsulfatase (10 days), tellurite reduction, thermostable catalase (68 ºC), semi-quantitative catalase test, and
urease.
