Synonym: Mycobacterium kansasii subtype II.
Acid-fast, moderately long or long rods.
Rough colonies grows in about 10 days at 37 ºC and, a few days later, at 25 ºC. No
growth at 42 or 45 ºC. Yellow pigmentation is developed only after light exposure. No
growth on 5% (w/v) NaCl or on MacConkey agar without crystal violet.
Isolated from human sputum.
Resistant to isoniazid (1 µg/ml), TCH (1 µg/ml), and streptomycin. Susceptible to p-nitrobenzoic acid (400 µg/ml), hydroxylamine (600
µg/ml), amikacin, clarithromycin, linezolid, moxifloxacin and rifamycins. Variable resistance to thiacetazone (10 µg/ml).
Causes chronic human pulmonary disease resembling tuberculosis.
