Synonym: Mycobacterium kansasii subtype IV.
Acid-fast, moderately long or long rods.
Rough colonies grows in more than 7 days at 37 ºC on Lowenstein-Jensen medium.
Grows at 25 ºC, but not at 45 ºC. Photochromogenic. No growth on 5% (w/v) NaCl or
on MacConkey agar without crystal violet.
The type strain was isolated from aspiration of bronchial secretions) of a patient known for Still’s disease.
Resistant to TCH (5 µg/ml) and ethambutol (>16 µg/ml). Susceptible to amikacin, clarithromycin, co-trimoxazole, linezolid,
fluoroquinolones, and rifamycins.
Considered to be non-pathogenic.

Positive results for arylsulfatase (10 days) and semi-quantitative catalase test.
Negative results for arylsulfatase (3 days), thermostable catalase (68 ºC), niacin accumulation, nitrate reduction, pyrazinamidase,
tellurite reduction, and urease.
Variable results for Tween 80 hydrolysis.
