Acid-fast rods. Gram-positive. Spores are not produced.
Colonies are smooth, white, nonchromogenic, visible within 7 days at 25-37 ºC on
Lowenstein-Jensen medium. Growth is not observed at 42 ºC. Scanty growth on
MacConkey agar by some strains.
Isolated from sputa of patients with various respiratory signs.
Resistant to thiophen-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide (TCH) and isoniazid. Susceptible to p-nitrobenzoic acid, hydroxylamine, amikacin,
azlocillin, cefoxitin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, ethambutol, gatifloxacin, linezolid, minocycline, moxifloxacin, rifabutin,
sulfamethoxazole, and tobramycin. Variable susceptibility to imipenem, rifampicin, and streptomycin.

Negative results for arylsulfatase (3 days), catalase, semiquantitative catalase, heat-stable catalase (68 ºC), beta-glucosidase, nitrate
reduction, niacin accumulation, Tween 80 hydrolysis, and urease.
