Synonym: Mycobacterium kansasii subtype V.
Acid-fast, moderately long or long rods.
Rough colonies grows in about 14 days at 37 ºC on Lowenstein-Jensen medium.
Beige colonies can be obtained on 7H10 medium after 2 weeks’ growthin the same
culture conditions. Grows at 25 ºC, but not at 45 ºC. Usually photochromogenic. No
growth on 5% (w/v) NaCl or on MacConkey agar without crystal violet.
The type strain was isolated from an expectoration of a patient.
Resistant to TCH (5 µg/ml).
It is rarely pathogenic.

Negative results for arylsulfatase (3 days), niacin accumulation, pyrazinamidase, and tellurite reduction.
Variable results for thermostable catalase (68 ºC), semi-quantitative catalase test, nitrate reduction, Tween 80 hydrolysis, and urease.
