Member of the
Mycobacterium simiae complex.
Acid-fast rods. Gram-positive. Non-motile. Non-sporeforming. No branching.
Colonies are smooth and strongly yellow pigmented and grow on
Lowenstein-Jensen and Middlebrook 7H11 media after 2-3 weeks of incubation at 37
ºC.  Grow slower at 30 ºC. No growth at 42 ºC. No growth on MacConkey agar without
crystal violet.
May be involved in pulmonary disease mostly in immunocompromised patients or in cervical lymphadenitis.
Isolated from sputum in Italy, Greee, France, Iran and from jaw gland of a subject with neck adenopathy in Sweden.
Resistant to p-nitrobenzoate (500 μg/ml) , thiophene-2-carboxylic hydrazide (5μg/ml), thiacetazone (10 μg/ml), hydroxylamine (500
μg/ml), isoniazid (1 μg/ml), oleate  (250 μg/ml), clarithromycin, and rifampicin. Susceptible to amikacin, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin,
moxifloxacin, ethambutol, linezolid, minocycline, and trimethoprim+sulfamethoxazole

Positive results for thermostable catalase (68 ºC), semi-quantitative catalase (> 45 mm), and tellurite reduction.

Negative results for arylsulfatase (3 days), niacin accumulation, nitrate reduction, Tween 80 hydrolysis, and urease.
