Closely related to Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC).
Acid-fast rods. Gram-positive. Non-motile. Non-sporeforming.
Grows on solid media in approximately 15-20 days at temperatures
ranging from 25 to 37 ºC, produces rough colonies, and is non-pigmented. No
growth at 42 ºC No growth on MacConkey agar without crystal violet.
Isolated from cutaneous lesions of patients in the USA and Italy.
Susceptible to amikacin, clarithromycin, doxycycline (susceptible/intermediate), linezolid, moxifloxacin, rifabutin and trimethoprim +
sulfamethoxazole. Resistant to rifampicin. Variable resistance to ethambutol and ciprofloxacin.
