NOTES

Moraxella catarrhalis and Branhamella
catarrhalis
are homotypic synonyms
since they have the same type strain

Moraxella caviae and Neisseria caviae
are homotypic synonyms since they
have the same type strain

Moraxella lacunata subspecies
lacunata
and Moraxella lacunata
subspecies liquefaciens
are not validly
published names

Moraxella ovis and Neisseria ovis are
homotypic synonyms since
they have the same type strain
Genus Acinetobacter
Brisou and Prévot 1954
Gram-negative rods (0.9-1.6–1.5 x 1.5–2.5 μm), becoming spherical in the
stationary phase of growth. Grouped in pairs or chains. Aerobic. Nonmotile
but may display “twitching motility”. Optimum growth temperature 33-35 ºC;
some can't grow at 37 ºC. Catalase  positive. Oxidase negative. Nitrates are
not reduced. Found mostly in water & soil
Family Moraxellaceae
Rossau et al. 1991
NOTE

According to Vaneechoutte et al.
2008,
Acinetobacter grimontii Carr
et al. 2003 is a later heterotypic
synonym of
Acinetobacter junii
Bouvet and Grimont 1986
Genus Moraxella (Branhamella)
Lwoff 1939 (Catlin 1970)
Gram-negative rods or cocci. The rods are often very short and plump,
close to a coccus shape (1.0–1.5 x 1.5–2.5 μm). The cocci are usually
smaller (0.6–1.0 μm. Aerobic, but some strains may grow weakly under
anaerobic conditions. May be encapsulated. Nonmotile but surface-bound
“twitching motility” has been observed. No pigment production. Oxidase
and catalase are positive. Some species are human or animal pathogens.
