2 subspecies:
-
Listeria fleischmannii subsp. fleischmannii (Bertsch et al. 2013) den Bakker et al. 2013,
-
Listeria fleischmannii subsp. coloradonensis den Bakker et al. 2013.
Gram-positive, short rods with rounded ends, 0.4–0.6 x 0.7–1.2 µm. Spores are not
produced. Non-motile at 25 and 37 ºC.
Colonies are 0.4–1.0 mm in diameter, translucent, circular and low convex with entire
margins and smooth surfaces when cultured on BHI and TSB agars. Colonies
appear bluish grey by normal illumination and have a bluish appearance in oblique
transmitted-light. Facultative anaerobic. Optimum growth temperature is 30-37 ºC. No
growth at 47 ºC,  Weak growth at 4 ºC after 2 weeks. Hemolysis is not produced.
Camp-negative.
- Subsp. fleischmannii was isolated from a hard cheese in Switzerland. Resistant to
clindamycin and nalidixic acid.
- Subsp. coloradonensis was isolated from environmental (bovine faecal pat, soil,
drag swab and water) samples collected from a cattle ranch in northern Colorado,
USA.
Undetermined.
