Gasser and Boeufgras, 1988.
Gram-positive long and short rods, occuring singly or in pairs. Nonspore-forming.
Nonmotile.
Colonies are not pigmented, 0.7-1.0 mm in diameter after 2 days on APT agar.
Facultatively anaerobic. No growth 37 ºC. Grows at 4-30 ºC. Grows at/on: 0.01%
tetrazolium, 0.1% sodium nitrite, 6% NaCl medium. No growth in 0.05 % potassium
tellurite or 8% NaCl medium. Grows on STAA medium. No growth on acetate medium.
Range of pH is 5.0-9.0, optimum 7.0.
Isolated from soil and grass.
Resistant to nalidixic acid & oxacillin. Sensitive to furadoine, tetracycline, gentamicin, polymyxin B, erythromycin, novobiocin, amikacin,
tobramycin, and ampicillin. Produces a bacteriocin, brochocin-C, active on a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria, including strains of
Brochothrix thermosphacta and species of Carnobacterium, Kurthia, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Listeria.
There is no evidence for pathogenicity.
