Gram-positive rods, 1.0-1.2 / 3.0-6.0 µm, occuring singly or in pairs. Non-motile.
Colonies on supplemented MRS agar (0.1% L-cysteine and 2% fructose) are white,
translucent, with a smooth to rough surface, with a convex elevation, 2-3 mm in
diameter, under anaerobic conditions after 3 days at 35 ºC. Grows at 15 and 50 ºC; no
growth at 5 ºC. Facultative anaerobe; grows well on supplemented MRS agar under
aerobic conditions. Can grow weakly in NaCl 5%. Range of pH 3.0-12.0 (in
supplemented MRS broth).
Isolated from the honey stomach of the honeybee, Apis mellifera mellifera.
Description is based mostly on API 50 CHL and API ZYM (bioMerieux) results.
Positive results for acid phosphatase, cystine arylamidase, esculin hydrolysis, esterase C4, esterase lipase C8, beta-glucosidase,
leucine arylamidase, valine arylamidase, acid production from esculin, fructose, glucose (without gas production) and salicin.
Negative results for catalase, beta-galactosidase, alpha-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, acid production from adonitol,
amygdalin, D-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, fucose, galactose, beta-gentiobiose, gluconate, 2- and
5-ketogluconate, glycerol, glycogen, N-acetylglucosamine, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, maltose, mannose, melezitose, melibiose,
raffinose, rhamnose, ribose, sorbitol, sorbose, sucrose, tagatose, trehalose, starch, turanose, xylitol and xylose.
