heterofermentative), Lactobacillus reuteri-phylogenetic group], Lactobacillus equigenerosi Endo, Roos, Satoh, Morita and Okada 2008.
Gram-positive, spherical or oval cocci (0.5-0.8 x 0.8-1.5 μm), occurring singly or in
pairs. Tetrad-like cells are uncommon. Nonmotile.
Colonies are formed under anaerobic conditions only;colonies on MRS agar are
beige, smooth and 1-2 mm. Growth in broth is enhanced under anaerobic condition
in diameter after incubation for 2 days at 37 ºC. Facultatively anaerobic. Optimum
growth temperature 30-45 ºC. No growth at 20 or 50 ºC. Weak growth at 25 ºC. Can
grow at pH 4.0 but not at pH 3.5. Can grow in 2.5% NaCl media but not in 5% NaCl.
Isolated from faeces of thoroughbred racehorse, Japan.
Undetermined.

faeces of thoroughbred racehorses. IJSEM, 58, 914-918.
Obligately heterofermentative.
Positive results for fermentation of: fructose (weak), glucose (acid), maltose, melibiose,
ribose (weak), sucrose & xylose.
Negative results for catalase, nitrates reduction, fermentation of: cellobiose, mannitol, melezitose, rhamnose, salicin, sorbitol, starch
& trehalose.
Variable results for fermentation of: arabinose, galactose, lactose & raffinose.
