Gram-positive, curved rods (0.5-1.0 x 10-30 μm) occurring singly.  Nonmotile.
Colonies on BL agar after incubation under anaerobic conditions for 2 days at 37 ºC
are beige, smooth and approximately 0.7-1.0 mm in diameter. Strictly anaerobic.
Optimum growth temperature 30-40 ºC. No growth at 15 or 50 ºC. Variable growth at
45 ºC.
Isolated from faeces of a thoroughbred racehorse.

Obligately homofermentative (hexoses are fermented almost exclusively to lactic acid
by the Embden-Meyerhof pathway; pentoses or gluconate are not fermented).

Positive results for fermentation of: cellobiose, fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, mannitol, mannose, melezitose (weak),  
melibiose (weak), raffinose (weak), salicin & starch (weak).

Negative results for catalase, fermentation of: arabinose, gluconate, rhamnose, ribose, sorbitol, trehalose & xylose.
