lactobacilli (obligately homofermentative),
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. sunkii Kudo et al. 2012.
Gram-positive rods, 0.4-0.6 x 2.0-5.0 µm, occuring singly, in pairs or in short chains of
three or four cells. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on MRS agar after anaerobic growth for 48 h at 30 ºC,  are beige, with a
smooth to rough surface, circular or slightly irregular in outline and 2-4 mm in
diameter. In MRS broth, weak growth occurs at 15 ºC but no growth occurs at 45 ºC.
Growth occurs at pH 4.0. Weak growth occurs with 4% (w/v) NaCl.
Isolated from sunki, a traditional, Japanese pickle, in the Nagano prefecture of Japan.
None.

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, fermentation of: amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose, fructose, glucose (without gas production),
gentibiose, D-mannitol, maltose, D-mannose, melibiose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, raffinose, salicin, sucrose, and D-trehalose.
Dextran is not produced from sucrose.

Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, catalase, nitrate reduction, fermentation of: D-adonitol, D- or L-arabinose, D- or L-arabitol,
dulcitol, erythritol, D- or L-fucose, gluconate, 2- or 5-ketogluconate, glycerol, glycogen, D-galactose, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose,
melezitose, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside, L-rhamnose, D-ribose, D-sorbitol, L-sorbose,
starch, turanose, methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, xylitol, D- or L-xylose.

Variable results for D-galactose fermentation.
