Gram-positive rods (1.01-1.38 x 1.74-3.84 μm) occurring singly, in pairs and in short
chains. Nonspore-forming. Motile.
Colonies on MRS agar after 4 days incubation at 28 ºC are 1.5-2.0 mm in diameter,
smooth, circular, regular and white. Microaerophilic. Weak growth at 45 ºC. Can grow
at 15 ºC. Range of pH 4.5-8.0. No growth in 5% NaCl medium.
Isolated from the surface of a eutrophic Korean freshwater pond.

Obligately homofermentative (hexoses are fermented almost exclusively to lactic acid
by the Embden-Meyerhof pathway; pentoses or gluconate are not fermented).

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, exopolysaccharide production from sucrose,
fermentation of: amygdalin, arbutin, cellobiose,
fructose, glucose (without gas production), maltose, mannitol, mannose, methyl alpha-D-mannoside, methyl alpha-D-glucoside,
N-acetylglucosamine, salicin, sucrose
, and trehalose.

Negative results for arginine hydrolysis, catalase, fermentation of: adonitol, L-arabinose, dulcitol, erythritol, D-galactose, glucona
te,
glycerol, glycogen, inositol, inulin, lactose, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, L-rhamnose, ribose, sorbitol, L-sorbose, starch, turanose,
xylose, 2-ketogluconate
, and 5-ketogluconate.
