Gram-positive rods, 0.5-1.0 / 2.1-6.3 µm, occuring singly or in long chains.
Non-motile. Nonspore-forming.
Colonies on MRS and TPY (tryptone phytone yeast extract) agar are white, smooth,
0.25-0.29 mm in diameter, under anaerobic conditions after 3 days at 37 ºC. Grows at
20 and 40 ºC. No growth at 15 and 45 ºC. Grows at pH 5-9.
Anaerobic FWGM (fermented wheatgerm medium) and TPY broth were the best
media for growth. Microaerophile; grows under anaerobic or microaerophilic
conditions (CampyGen system, Oxoid).
Isolated from the honey stomach of the honeybee, Apis mellifera mellifera.
Antagonistic effects in vitro against the Paenibacillus larvae subsp. larvae and Melissococcus plutonius.
No pathogenicity.

Obligate homofermentative.

Positive results for acid phosphatase, alanine arylamidase, arginine arylamidase, esculin hydrolysis, esterase C4 (weak reaction),
glycine arylamidase, beta-galactosidase (weak reaction), beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, histidine arylamidase,
phenylalanine arylamidase, leucine arylamidase, serine arylamidase, tyrosine arylamidase, acid production from amygdalin (weak
reaction), arbutin, fructose, gentiobiose, glucose, mannose, salicin and trehalose (weak reaction).

Negative results for alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, catalase, cystine arylamidase, alpha-chymotrypsin, esterase lipase
(C8), alpha-fucosidase, alpha-glucosidase, alpha-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, lipase C14, trypsin, urease, valine arylamidase,
acid production from adonitol, L- and D-arabinose, L- and D-arabitol, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, esculin, fucose, galactose,
gluconate, 2- and 5-ketogluconate, glycerol, glycogen, N-acetylglucosamine, inositol, inulin, lactose, D-lyxose, maltose, mannitol,
melezitose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, ribose, sorbitol, sorbose, starch, sucrose, tagatose, turanose, xylitol and xylose.
