Gram-positive cocci, grouped in pairs or short chains. Nonmotile.
Colonies on trypticase-soy-yeast extract (TSY) and blood agar are circular, smooth,
nonpigmented and nonhemolytic. Strains do not survive at 60 ºC for 30 min.
Facultatively anaerobic. Growth occurs at 10 and 45 ºC (negative in Chen's paper).
Growth in broth containing 6.5% NaCl is variable (weak positive).
Subsp. saccharolyticus was isolated from cow feces and from straw bedding.
Subsp. taiwanensis was isolated from broccoli.

hippurate hydrolysis, acid production from: adonitol, D- or L-arabinose, L-arabitol, erythritol, D- or L-fucose, glycerol, glycogen, inositol,
5-ketogluconate, D-lyxose, alpha-methyl-D-mannoside, rhamnose, xylitol, D- and L-xylose.
