Gram-negative rods, 0.5 x 2.0-3.0 µm, occuring singly. Motile. Capsule is produced.
Colonies on Luria-Bertani agar after incubation for 24 h at 37 ºC, white, circular,
elevated, smooth.  On MacConkey agar, colonies are circular (1-2 mm in diameter),
white, opaque and elevated with regular margin. The optimum growth temperature is
37 ºC and no growth is observed above 45 ºC. Can grow in 90 % (v/v) serum and can
tolerate up to 9 % (w/v) NaCl in nutrient broth. Facultatively anaerobic.
Isolated from a blood sample of a neonate in Mwanza, Tanzania. Sensitive to imipenem, meropenem and nitrofurantoin.
Resistant to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, piperacillin/sulbactam, piperacillin-tazobactam, cefalotin, cefuroxime,
cefuroxime-axetil, cefoxitin, cefpodoxim, cefotaxim, ceftazidim, gentamicin, tobramicin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, tetracyclin and
trimethoprim + sulphamethoxazol.
Undetermined.

bugandensis sp. nov., isolated from neonatal blood. Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 2016; 66:968-974.
Description is based mostly on API 20 E and API 50 CH (Biomerieux) results.

Positive results for arginine dihydrolase, catalase, citrate utilization, ONPG, ornithine decarboxylase, nitrate reduction, tryptophan
deaminase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from amygdalin, L-arabinose, arbutin, cellobiose, dulcitol, esculin (weakly),
D-fructose, D-galactose, D-glucose, glycerol, gentibiose (weakly), metyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside, lactose (48h), D-lyxose (48h),
D-mannose, D-mannitol, D-maltose, melibiose, D-sorbitol, L-rhamnose, D-raffinose, D-ribose, salicin (48h), saccharose, trehalose
(weakly), and D-xylose

Negative results for lysine decarboxylase, gelatinase, H
2S production, indole production, methyl red test, oxidase, tryptophan
deaminase, urease, acid production from D-arabinose, D- and L-arabitol, D-adonitol, erythritol, D- and L-fucose, gluconate, 2- and
5-ketogluconate, inulin, melezitose, methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside, N-acetylglucosamine, L-sorbose, starch, D-tagatose,
L-xylose, and methyl-beta-D-xylopyranoside.

Variable results for acid production from amygdalin, and inositol.

Species may be differentiated from
Enterobacter cloacae by not fermenting methyl alpha-D-mannopyranoside and potassium
gluconate.
