Gram-positive diphtheroid cells. Nonmotile. Nonspore-forming.
Colonies are white-grayish, glistening, convex, creamy and 1-2 mm in diameter with
entire edges after 24 h of incubation at 37 ºC in a 5% CO
2-enriched atmosphere on
sheep blood Columbia agar. CAMP test is positive.
Isolated from human (nasopharyngeal specimen, throat swabs) diagnosed with pharyngeal diphtheria.
Does not possess the diphtheria toxin gene. It's disease association is questionable.

Fermentative metabolism.
Description of most biochemical tests is based on API CORYNE, API 50CH & API ZYM.

esterase lipase (C8), pyrazinamidase (weak), acid production from: D-arabinose,
fructose, L-fucose, glucose, lactose, maltose, mannose, ribose & sucrose (weak).

Negative results for chymotrypsin activity, esculin hydrolysis, lipophilism, nitrate reduction, tyrosine hydrolysis, urease, acid production
from: N-acetylglucosamine, adonitol, amygdalin, L-arabinose, arabitol, arbutin, cellobiose, dulcitol, erythritol, D-fucose, galactose,
beta-gentiobiose, gluconate, 2-ketogluconate, glycerol, glycogen, inositol, inulin, lyxose, mannitol, melezitose, melibiose, raffinose,
