Gram-negative coccobacilli. Nonmotile.
Colonies are approximately 1 mm in diameter, entire, convex, opaque, tan in colour
and sometimes viscid in consistency after growth on ECA medium for 48 h.
Microaerophilie, requires an atmosphere enriched with 5-10% CO
2. No growth on
MacConkey agar or ECA medium. Grows more slowly at 24 than at 37
ºC. No growth
at 42
ºC. Growth on tryptose agar is not stimulated by haemin or NAD.
Isolated from the urethral fossa of donkeys (3 strains).
Does not appear to produce disease in jacks or mares, although it is contagious and induces an antibody response in infected
animals.

Biochemically similar to T. equigenitalis reference strains. Species can be differentiated by 16S rRNA sequence analysis.
Positive for catalase and oxidase. Asaccharolytic, does not reduce nitrate, does not hydrolyse aesculin and MRVP-, urease- and
indole negative. See
T. equigenitalis for more.
