Historical synonyms:
Actinomyces naeslundii genospecies 2 (Johnson et al., 1990) Thompson and Lovestedt 1951,  Actinomyces
naeslundii
serotypes II, III and NV,  Thompson and Lovestedt 1951, A. viscosus serotype II (Johnson et al., 1990) Georg et al. 1969.
Gram-positive diphtheroid rods, sometimes occurring in curved or  branched filaments.
Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are flat, round with entire edges, small after 24 h on BHI agar; after 7-14 days
the colonies are 1-3 mm in diameter, convex, smooth or finely granular, white and soft.
In BHI broth grows as a flocculent mass to the top with discreet soft granules below.
Alpha-haemolysis may occur. Facultative anaerobic. Grows at 35-37 ºC, optimally.
No growth at 25 ºC.
Isolated from human sputum, human abscess, gingival crevice, subgingival plaque and from hamster.
Undetermined.
