Phylum Firmicutes, Class Bacilli, Order Bacillales, Family Staphylococcaceae, Genus Salinicoccus, Salinicoccus sesuvii Kampfer et
Gram-positive cocci, 1.0-1.2 μm in diameter, occuring singly, in pairs, tetrads or
clumps. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on nutrient agar are smooth, pinkish, circular, translucent and shiny with
entire edges. Good growth occurs after 48 h on tryptone soy agar and Marine agar
2218 at 28 ºC. No growth occurs on MacConkey agar at 28 ºC. No growth occurs at 2
or 45 ºC. Moderately halophilic; growth occurs in media containing 0-25% NaCl;
optimum 8-10% NaCl. Grows in pH 6.5-11.5; optimum pH 8.5. Growth temperature
range 4-36 ºC.
Isolated from the rhizosphere of Sea Purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum).
Positive results for aesculin hydrolysis, arginine dihydrolase, catalase, gelatin hydrolysis, oxidase, Voges-Proskauer test, weak acid
production from: D-glucose & maltose.
Negative results for casein hydrolysis, DNA hydrolysis, beta-galactosidase, indole production, lysine decarboxylase, methyl red test,
nitrates reduction, ornithine decarboxylase, starch hydrolysis, tyrosine hydrolysis, urease acid production from: adonitol, L-arabinose,
D-arabitol, dulcitol, erythritol, fructose, galactose, glycerol, D-mannitol, myo-inositol, lactose, melibiose, methyl alpha-D-glucoside,
raffinose, L-rhamnose, salicin, sucrose, D-sorbitol & D-xylose.
