Gram-positive cocci, occuring singly, in pairs or small clusters, non-motile,
non-spore-forming.
Colonies are circular, slightly convex, smooth, opaque, light grey and 2-3 mm in
diameter after 24h incubation at 37 ºC. Non-haemolytic on bovine blood agar.
Facultatively anaerobic. Can grow at 10 and 47 ºC; no growth at 5 ºC. Good growth in
10% NaCl (w/v), less intensive in 15% NaCl, and no growth in 20% NaCl.
Isolated from milk samples of dairy cows with subclinical or mild clinical mastitits (12 strains),  teat apex colonization (1 strain).
Susceptible to novobiocin and lysostaphin. Resistant to lysozyme, polymyxins and deferoxamine.

Positive results for arginine dihydrolase, N-acetylglucosamine, catalase, DN-ase,
nitrate reduction, acid production from: D-fructose, D-glucose, lactose, D-mannose,
D-ribose & sucrose.

Negative results for acetoin production, alkaline phosphatase, arginine arylamidase, clumping factor, esculin hydrolysis,
beta-galactosidase, ornithine decarboxylase, oxidase, pyrrolidonyl arylamidase, urease, acid production from: D- or L-arabinose,
D-adonitol, D- or L-arabitol, cellobiose, D- or L-fucose, D-lyxose, maltose, D-mannitol, melezitose, raffinose, L-rhamnose, L-sorbose,
D-sorbitol, D-tagatose, turanose,  D- or L-xylose.

Variable results for coagulase (coagulase-negative after 4 h, but some strains are positive after 24 h), beta-glucuronidase, glycogen
utilization, acid production from: amygdalin, D-galactose, gentiobiose, melibiose & trehalose.
