Optimal temperature, 30 ºC; no growth at 20 or 40 ºC. No water-soluble brown
pigment is formed in the presence of 0.1% tyrosine or tryptophan. Weak production of
water-soluble green fluorescent pigment. Growth occurs in the presence of 1% oxgall.
No growth occurs in the presence of 1% glycine and 3% NaCl. Aerobic; anaerobic
growth occurs with nitrate. Grows in pH 5.5-8.5

Gram-negative straight rods, 0.7-0.9 x 5-10 μm, up to 42 μm in old cultures. Coccoid
form occur in old cultures. Curved or S-shaped variants have been reported.
Intracellular poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate granules are present. Upon initial isolation, the
cells form highly viscous flocs, within which the cells swim steadily in straight lines.
Motile by up to 11 flagella. Not swimming in nonviscous media, exhibiting an
ineffectual “floundering about” movement; but if suspended in a medium of high
viscosity they are swimming steadily in straight lines.

Positive results for catalase, nitrate reduction (only to nitrite), oxidase, phosphatase & urease. Carbohydrates are not catabolized.
Can utilize as sole carbon source: succinate, fumarate, malate, oxaloacetate, pyruvate, lactate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, L-alanine,
L-glutamate, L-aspartate, L-glutamine, L-asparagine, L-proline & L-arginine.
Negative results for casein hydrolysis, esculin hydrolysis, gelatin hydrolysis (4 days at 30 ºC), hippurate hydrolysis, indole production,
starch hydrolysis & trybutirin hydrolysis. No utilization as sole carbon source of: citrate, alpha-ketoglutarate, malonate, acetate,
