Gram-positive cocci, nonspore-forming, grouped in pairs or short chain. Nonmotile.
Colonies are whitish-grey, circular and 0.5 mm in diameter when grown on nutrient
agar at 37 ºC for 16 h. Haemolysis is not produced on blood agar.
Facultatively anaerobic. Optimum growth occurs between 30 and 37 ºC and at pH 8.
Growth occurs in the presence of 3% NaCl. No growth in the presence of 6% NaCl,
40% bile or 10% ethanol.
Isolated from the uropygial (preen) gland of wild Red-billed Woodhoopoes (Phoeniculus purpureus), South Africa.

trehalose & D-xylose. Acid production is delayed (48 h) from: dulcitol, glycerol, meso-inositol, lactose, mannitol, sorbitol & sorbose.
Negative results for catalase, oxidase, gelatin liquefaction, nitrate reduction, H2S production, Voges-Proskauer reaction, pyruvate
utilization, indole production, casein hydrolysis, Tween 80 hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, hippurate hydrolysis, DNA hydrolysis, arginine
dihydrolase, acid production from: D-galactose, inulin, D-melezitose, D-melibiose, raffinose & sodium succinate.
