Genus Enterococcus
Schleifer and Kilpper-Balz 1984 (ex Thiercelin and Jouhaud 1903)
Gram-positive cocci. Some species may be motile. Facultative anaerobes.
Most are resistant to 0.4% sodium azide, 6.5% NaCl or 40% (v/v) bile. Grow at
10 °C and 45 °C, optimally at 35-37 °C. Fermentative metabolism.

Gram-positive, spherical cells. Some species may be motile. Endospores are notformed. Facultative
anaerobic, anaerobic or microaerophilic chemo-organotrophic growth. Catalase-negative.
Some species are carboxyophilic or halophilic. May be resistant to bile.
