Gram-positive short rods, 0.6-1.0 µm in diameter, occur singly, in pairs and in ‘V’
forms and can be club-shaped. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies on blood agar after 24 h are grey-white but become yellowish in time, 1 mm
in diameter and raised. Hemolysis is not produced. CAMP test is negative. Aerobic,
facultative anaerobic but poor or no growth under strictly anaerobic conditions. Grows
at/in : 25, 35 and 42 ºC. Grows in: 6-10% NaCl media.
Isolated from seawater, human infant stools and blood cultures. Strains are generally susceptible to a wide variety of antimicrobials.

ase, esculin hydrolysis, esterase lipase, alpha-fucosidase, gelatinase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, alpha-glucosidase, beta-
glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, indole production, lipase, lipophilism, lysine decarboxylase, alpha-mannosidase,
methyl-red reaction, ornithine decarboxylase, oxidase, starch hydrolysis, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, valine arylamidase, Voges-
Proskauer reaction, acid production from: galactose, glycerol, glycogen, lactose, maltose, mannitol, raffinose, salicin, sucrose,
trehalose & xylose.
Variable results for esterase & leucine arylamidase.
