Phylum Proteobacteria, Class Epsilonproteobacteria, Order Campylobacterales, Family Campylobacteraceae, Genus Campylobacter,
Campylobacter subantarcticus Debruyne et al. 2010.
Gram-negative, slightly curved rods. Motile by a single polar flagellum.
Colonies are colourless, round, entire, convex and 1-1.5 mm in diameter after culture
on 5% blood agar for 72 hours under microaerobic conditions. Alpha-hemolytic.
Grow at 37 ºC and 42 ºC, but not at 25 ºC, under microaerobic conditions. No growth
observed under aerobic conditions at either 37 or 25 ºC. Growth observed at 37 ºC
under anaerobic conditions on blood agar.
Grow on media containing 1.0-2.0% ox-bile, 2.0% NaCl, 32 mg/L nalidixic acid,
100U/L 5-fluorouracil and 0.05% sodium fluoride. Most strains grow on media
containing 1% glycine. Most strains do not grow on media containing 4 mg/L
metronidazole or on MacConkey agar. No growth observed on unsupplemented
nutrient agar, casein agar, lecithin agar, tyrosine agar, or on media containing 0.02 or
0.05% safranin, 0.1% KMnO4, 0.005% crystal violet, 3.5-4.0% NaCl, 0.1% sodium
deoxycholate, 32 mg/L cephalothin or 32 mg/L carbenicillin.
Isolated from from wild birds in the sub-Antarctic region.

Positive results for oxidase and catalase.
Negative results for hippurate hydolysis, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis, selenite reduction & H2S production on TSI.
